Luke

Luke, a 4 year old male, was turned over to the Colorado Vizsla Rescue group on February 15, 2002 by his family in Dodge City, KS. They had heard of our rescue group’s success in finding good homes for Vizslas. Luke had been a part of their family since he was a

puppy, but because of the families’ increasingly busy schedule, they knew he would be happier with a family that was home more and could give him the attention he craved. They thought they had found a good family for Luke, but that family gave him up to the local shelter. Our rescue group was in the process of obtaining him last year at this time, but the vet he was taken to recognized him and contacted the original owner. They wanted him back so we didn’t get him. One year later the owner contacted us and now you know the rest of the story.

Luke was an extremely shy boy, but within a week became comfortable in his foster home in Colorado Springs. Luke had always been a ‘kennel’ dog, so his foster family housetrained him, introduced him to pet doors, stairs, mirrors, and other common household items. Luke caught on quickly (a smart boy too!) and soon learned, from the other Vizslas in the house, how to beg and how to ‘ask’ to be covered with a blanket! Luke also showed his hunting instincts with his hours of stalking and pointing birds. He was certain he could catch one of those blue birds if he was patient enough. Everyone in his foster home (even the old, grouchy Vizsla) grew to love sweet Luke.

Luke was checked out by our rescue vet, and except for worms (for which he was treated) was found to be in very good health. Within a few weeks his foster family began looking for a forever home for him. On March 10, 2002 Luke was adopted by a couple in Longmont, CO. They have a Vizsla/German Shorthair Pointer mix, who has become Luke’s “brother”. Luke is doing great in his new home. He lives on a golf course where he gets nightly walks around the perimeter. The course has ducks

and geese, but Luke shows NO interest! He only cares to point and flush the small birds! Luke, who has always been afraid of water, received his first bath in a long time at his new home. He did wonderfully, which is an indication how quickly he has grown to trust his new owners. Luke has found himself spoiled in his new home – a doggie bed of his own, daily walks, and lots of attention! Although Luke still has a ways to go to overcome his shyness and some other fears, his new owners are very pleased with his progress and very happy to have him in their family.
