Jake is a young neutered Vizsla (about 11 mos. old). His transition to our rescue was very complicated. He was picked up as a stray in Portales, NM, and shortly thereafter transferred him to the shelter in Roswell, NM. A shelter in Denver arranged to transport 60 dogs from the Roswell shelter and Jake was one of those dogs. Our shelters here in CO transport dogs from small shelters because our population gives the dog a better chance of being adopted, shelter helping shelter.

Beth picked Jake up from Colorado Humane and transported him to his Fort Collins temporary foster. He was then transferred to another rescue volunteer, who found out her dog did not like Jake, so Jake was again moved and it was back with Beth. The circle was completed.

Jake is a very sweet and calm guy and was very thin when we got him. By the time he was ready to be adopted, he had gained sufficient weight. He is the Velcro V that you would expect him to be and is content when by your side. The long cuddles on the couch will last as long as you let them. He also sleeps very well at night, if allowed to snuggle up along side you.

An adorable trait Jake has is what I call “happy feet.” When he gets excited about a walk or playing with my teenage sons, he will prance or dance around with his front feet like a horse. He is very gentle when he plays, but does like to pull hair and tug on it like a toy. His gentle personality makes it easy to walk with him on a leash and there is little pulling. He loves to be around other dogs. Because he is young, he will play with them even when they are ready to stop.

Crate training has been the only difficult task with Jake. He does not enjoy being in a crate and will whine and lick the bars until let out. He does, however, get distracted for a short time if given ice cubes and a cookie. The crate is not an issue while riding in a car, though. He will ride contently in a crate (in the car) for as long as the trip is. I think a small room or crate training will need to be continued for Jake’s safety if he is left alone for a short time. He doesn’t get into much if he is watched, but for some reason will look for and try to eat softener sheets if he finds them. Paper towels are also a favorite.

Jake was adopted by a family who found out he was more than they could handle, so he came back to his original foster parent, Beth and her family. They had wanted to adopt him in the first place and now they were going to make it final. So Jake is finally happy and in the home he wanted in the first place. We just didn’t understand what he was trying to tell us all along. These guys do have a way of finally getting their point across. So now Jake is happy where he belongs with Beth and her sons. - Rita
