CHUCK

 August, 31, 2005 – October 16, 2005

Chuck is a purebred Vizsla male, approximately a year old. He was picked up as a stray and he is underweight. He is good on a leash, knows sit, his name and he is friendly and extremely energetic. He has more energy than the sun and needs someone to take him to the park often, and let him out in the yard. He is a happy dog, has a good appetite and is not picky about his food. He loves people and is housebroken, more or less. He is GREAT with children and good around other dogs. He met many of them at the dog park with me and he gets excited to see humans with as much energy as he has. He also loves to play fetch and retrieves a ball well. He is a better running partner than a reading partner!

He is a beggar. He will chew if he is bored and not tired out. He is a door dasher...but the good news is that once he gets "out" he freezes and you can call him right back. We don’t know how he is around cats yet. He will not do well as a couch potato or in a home where he is alone all day.

Update: The only distructo chewing Chuck did was that second day he was with us, he chewed my husband's slipper. He hasn't chewed anything since! I think it is necessary to keep him busy and tired out and then he doesn't chew. He and Rusty will gang up on Hannah, not in a bad way, they just get to running, romping, chasing and wrestling and then bark at her to get her to join in. I must admit we have only taken him a couple short walks, we have let Rusty tire him out and Rusty has done WELL!

Chuck does great on leash, he heels well and will sit when you stop walking and say "sit". He is very much a Velcro Vizsla, he is starting to realize, somewhat, that it is OK to let his people out of his sight. He doesn't lunge at treats or the food dishes anymore. He will sit patiently and wait for his treat or food. He will stay out of the kitchen when we are preparing food. He has really come around nicely, but does have a little way to go yet. He still has to "lay" on you and is jumping up on us. Rusty is dominant over him too, not sure if that is just Rusty or if that is Chuck having a submissive personality. Chuck doesn't seem much interested in birds and squirrels, although Rusty has been teaching him. Yesterday I saw him watching a squirrel without Rusty's help. Our house is littered with toys, so everywhere he turns there is something he can play with or chew on. – Roni

Jeremy and Becky met Chuck and decided that Chuck would make a good fit in their family. They have a Boxer who is very willing to tire Chuck out. - Rita

Chuck Update March 2006:
Chuck is doing very well. He has adjusted wonderfully to his new home and we think he is very happy here. He has gained some weight and is up to 51 pounds. He has a very good appetite. Chuck and Baxter, our boxer, seem to get along very well and are always playing. They wear me out! Chuck has developed a fear of the washing machine (I have no idea why!) and likes to hide in the bathtub when we are doing laundry. He certainly is not lacking of personality in any way! He is a very sweet and loving dog....we feel so lucky to have found him. He is a good fit in our family. Chuck is quick to let us know when he feels he is not getting enough attention....he crouches down on his front legs and barks until we bend down and pet him. He's training us well!

About a month ago, he started scratching his neck more than normal. We took him to the vet and found out he had an ear infection. Much to Chuck's horror, we had to clean out his ear twice a day and then put medicine in it. He was not happy about that! But he has healed up well.

Chuck is wonderful with people and children and thinks that everyone that comes to the door (the UPS man, the meter reader, etc.) is there just to see him! Training is going well. He is very smart. The biggest problem we have had is getting him to stop jumping up. He wants to be the center of attention all the time. He comes running if we are petting Baxter to push him out of the way and get in on the action! He's doing great and we just adore him!

-Becky and Jeremy
