Aspen was owner-released into rescue on July 15, 2001. Her first owner couldn't keep her because she moved to a place where she couldn't have dogs. Aspen ended up with a retired man and his wife. They had Aspen for about 3 months and just couldn't handle her, she is a very energetic girl. They just didn't have the energy to try and train her. She is a very loving and sweet little girl. She is very strong for her size, she is small, and weighs probably about 40 to 41#.

Aspen is 6 yrs old and spayed.  She gets along well with children and other dogs. She sleeps in her crate, but doesn't like to be in it during the day. She loves to ride in the car. She loves attention. She loves to go hunting, on her own. She is fearful of thunder, so I would assume that she is gun shy.

Aspen was born to give unending attention and love to her humans. She has not had the right home life to do this as she grew up.  In Vizsla rescue, her opportunity has arrived. She suffers from separation anxiety and needs a lot of attention and love from her adoptive family. At night she sleeps peacefully in her crate. Her senses are very keen and she is an excellent watch dog. She is very loving and non aggressive, she wants to please and be loved.

When stormy weather blows in, she gets depressed and agitated. She tries to hide in small confined spaces. She also gets depressed and slightly timid at dusk.

She has spent her life trying to just fit in with her previous owners. This frustrates her. She is demanding what she should have had all along: a household where she can be the focus of attention and the love pours back and forth between human and dog. Aspen's second owner had her thoroughly evaluated by a successful professional dog trainer. Her separation anxiety causes her to scratch on doors when you leave, bark, and jump on the furniture to see where you are going. She will bark loudly when left in the car in her crate. Again she is afraid you aren't coming back. The barking stops after 3-4 minutes.

She gives the sweetest Vizsla kisses and hugs. It really melts your heart. She would love to sleep in bed with you and sit by you on the couch while you watch television.

Aspen found her forever home on September 22, 2001 to a loving and caring family in Denver, CO. Her new family says she’s doing great. She no longer tries to escape at every opportunity or jump over the fence. She has stopped barking when she’s crated and put on some healthy weight. Aspen’s new owners claim she is ‘the cuddliest dog ever’ and ‘a combination of total sweetness and absolutely fearless rascality.’

 

UPDATE: Feb 13, 2002

Aspen is much less troubled and anxious than the first few weeks. She no longer tries to escape at every opportunity, or to jump over the back fence to get at the squirrels. She is a combination of total sweetness and absolutely fearless rascality. She has become an accomplished counter surfer. No matter how aggravated we get at her she can melt it by cuddling up and kissing, or just putting her chin on the owner’s leg and letting out a big sigh.

A favorite story told by the owner is of a cold muddy day when she came in from the backyard, disappeared downstairs, & reappeared carrying her fleece bed. She trotted outside with it – head held high so that the bed, which was as big as she is, wouldn’t drag in the dirt – and puts it down at the base of her favorite tree, and sits in it so that she won’t have to sit in the mud!
