NEWTON'S PROFILE

Profile:

Four 6 ½ month old pups came to stay with us when their owner surrendered them to CWVRG April 4th. Their owner was given a female and he was unaware she was pregnant. The result was 4 male pups. The owner was elderly and had health issues. They were well cared for, but pretty wild. They didn’t have names, so we decided to name them after the Earp brothers of Wild West fame.

Everyone is familiar with Wyatt, Morgan, and Virgil Earp, since they have been featured in lots of films depicting the gunfight at the OK Coral. Not a lot of people have heard about Newton, a half-brother of the more famous Earps.

Newton, as well as his brothers, has his dew claws and natural tails. Before they are adopted, they will be neutered and up to date on their shots, microchipped and heartworm tested. He is a playful, cuddly, lap dog that loves attention. He’s very social with people and other dogs, including his brothers and our 3 Vs that are older than him (he seems to really like our 62-pound 2-year old male). Newton was interested in our cat on his first introduction. He wagged his tail as he walked over to sniff him (even though he got hissed at), but he didn’t seem too interested and soon returned to my lap for more petting. He loves to play ball, but his favorite pastime is leaning up against his humans as he gets petted (he can’t get enough of this). Newton has good recall on his name and he knows “no”. He’s learning “sit” quite well and he’s been in the house a couple of times. Newton was skittish coming into the house at first, but now he goes in and out on command. He’s good on a leash (although his leash training time has been fairly limited since his brothers like to eat his collar off of him).

When we first put the leash on him, he bit at it, but then he calmed down and didn’t pull a lot as we explored our 3 acres. He tolerates a crate pretty well, although he needs a little coaxing to go in, and he tends to get a bit vocal if he thinks you aren’t paying enough attention to him. Newton also may be prone to counter surfing, but he takes correction well and learns quickly (he seems to be eager to please and very smart), so I expect he’ll improve in these areas with just a bit of work. Newton tolerates baths and hair dryers well, doesn’t seem to dig or be destructive, as he’s content to play with his toys and his brothers. When he is initially let out of the kennel, Newton is excited and wants attention, so he tends to jump up and bite at your pants cuffs until he settles down and realizes that he will get plenty of petting time (he really likes that). He’s a very happy puppy that wags his tail a lot. Of the 4 Earp brothers, Newton is my personal favorite and if it wasn’t for our 3 current Vs, I’d keep him in a heartbeat. He’ll be hard to say goodbye to, but Newton will make someone a great pet with very little work. If you’re looking for a cuddly lap dog that is eager to please, Newton is the one for you! - Teila
